Michel faber the crimson petal and white5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() Played straight with Mrs Fox, whose initial looks don't change, but ends the story in a lot better shape than she does in the novel. In the adaption, he's a good deal less attractive, and portrayed mainly as a sexually frustrated fool. Henry in the novel is described as good looking and physically impressive, if a little solemn and intellectual, celibate and very religious, and in (requited) love with Mrs Fox. Mirrored in the case of Sophie, as her mother is incapable of caring about her and her father is vaguely apathetic. Abusive Parents: Mrs Castaway, to Sugar, in spades.Made into a three episode BBC drama in 2011. What Dickens would have written if Dickens was alive today, according to a review. The Crimson Petal and the White is a novel by Michel Faber, set in Victorian London and published in 2002. ![]()

![]() The author explains how the common wisdom before only until recently was that the brain would not change after childhood unless during our senior years when it started to decline. ![]() Norman Doidge says that The Brain That Changes Itself is a collection of stories of scientists, doctors and patients who discovered and proved that the brain does change itself, without the need of surgery or medication. However, he does a great job not only in reviewing all the science around the brain’s plasticity, but also in taking us through the stories of those who proved that plasticity with their own lives. Technically, not a neuroscientist or neurobiologist, then. ![]()

George orwell 1984pdf5/21/2023 ![]() The flat was seven flights up, and Winston, who was thirty-nine and had a varicose ulcer above his right ankle, went slowly, resting several times on the way. It was part of the economy drive in preparation for Hate Week. Even at the best of times it was seldom working, and at present the electric current was cut off during daylight hours. It depicted simply an enormous face, more than a meter wide: the face of a man of about forty-five, with a heavy black moustache and ruggedly handsome features. At one end of it a coloured poster, too large for indoor display, had been tacked to the wall. The hallway smelt of boiled cabbage and old rag mats. Winston Smith, his chin nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped quickly through the glass doors of Victory Mansions, though not quickly enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him. ![]() It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. ![]()

The painted man by peter v brett5/21/2023 ![]() Despising his father's cowardice for getting his mother killed, Arlen runs away from home, surviving by carving wards into the dirt every night. Humanity has discovered powerful defensive magic in the form of wards which can protect their homes, or even patches of ground, but this magic is not always perfect and the different varieties of demons have different ways to overcome the wards.Įleven-year-old Arlen lives on his parent's farmstead, but a coreling attack leaves his family decimated and many friends and neighbours dead. When the sun goes down, demons - or 'corelings' - from below the ground emerge on the surface to kill and feast on human flesh until morning comes. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Painted Man is set in a world where people live in terror of the night. I enjoyed it more than Ruckley's Winterbirth, and at about the same quality of enjoyment as Abercrombie's The Blade Itself, for example. I hadn't heard of it prior to receiving the review copy, which is a shame as it's an excellent debut novel that can stand alongside a number of other recent high-profile debuts quite comfortably. The Painted Man (aka The Warded Man in the USA) is the first book of The Demon Trilogy and is this year's big debut fantasy series from HarperCollins Voyager. ![]()

Murder most unladylike books5/21/2023 ![]() There are surely more secrets at Deepdean School than there seems. Who is on the suspect list? How has this happened? Follow the adventures of these two girls and delve deep to find the evidence. Daisy Wells and Hazel Wong have a mystery to solve (a proper one this time). It's 1934 and at Deepdean School, something most horrific has happened. It is a real gem and will leave you on the edge of your seat. It is a spectacular read and I am not surprised it being in the Doncaster Book Awards. If you like murder, mystery, friendship, and cake you should definitely read this book. It is an outstanding book and a real breath taker, that will leave you wanting the next two books. The whole plot of the book is unique and wondrous, being set in the 1930's. ![]() The author, Robin Stevens, is a true inspiration for readers. ![]() If found this book to be quite thrilling. Book the honey bus5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() The bees became a guiding force in May’s life, teaching her about family and community, loyalty and survival and the unequivocal relationship between a mother and her child. It was during this pivotal time in May’s childhood that she learned to take care of herself, forged an unbreakable bond with her grandfather and opened her eyes to the magic and wisdom of nature. Her mother had receded into a volatile cycle of neurosis and despair and spent most days locked away in the bedroom. May turned to her grandfather and the art of beekeeping as an escape from her troubled reality. That first close encounter was at once terrifying and exhilarating for May, and in that moment she discovered that everything she needed to know about life and family was right before her eyes, in the secret world of bees. She was five years old, her parents had recently split and suddenly she found herself in the care of her grandfather, an eccentric beekeeper who made honey in a rusty old military bus in the yard. ![]() Meredith May recalls the first time a honeybee crawled on her arm. An extraordinary story of a girl, her grandfather and one of nature’s most mysterious and beguiling creatures: the honeybee. ![]() |
